Electrolyte Powder and Sports Drinks What Is the Difference

Electrolyte powders and ready made sports drinks can both contain minerals such as sodium and potassium, but that does not make every product interchangeable. Formulations vary considerably, so the label matters more than the category name.

Format and convenience

A ready made sports drink can be consumed immediately. A powder or sachet is mixed with water, making it lighter to store and allowing the user to choose the amount of water within the product directions.

Sugar and carbohydrate

Some sports drinks contain carbohydrate or added sugar, while others are sugar free. Carbohydrate may be included in products intended for prolonged exercise, but it may not suit someone specifically looking for a zero sugar everyday drink.

Mydrate contains zero sugar. It uses steviol glycosides as a sweetener and is mixed with 300 to 500 ml of water.

Electrolyte amounts

The word “electrolytes” does not tell you how much of each mineral is present. Check the quantities per serving and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

One Mydrate sachet provides 201 mg sodium, 313 mg chloride, 300 mg potassium and 151 mg magnesium. It also contains 30 mg calcium and vitamins C, B5, B6 and B12.

Caffeine and other ingredients

Some hydration products contain caffeine, while others do not. Mydrate contains zero caffeine. The ingredient list also identifies the flavouring, sweetener, acids and any colours used, so it is worth reading the complete label rather than relying on the front of the pack.

Intended use

Sports drinks are often marketed around exercise, but their formulations are not all the same. Mydrate is a food supplement designed to be mixed with water and used once daily or as required. It should not be treated as a medical oral rehydration solution.
